Does appleseed support a shader with SSS "grouping"?

#1

Hello, I recently discovered Appleseed and haven’t used it yet (I don’t have Max or Maya, so I might be out of luck anyway). I was wondering, does the software support a feature whereby overlapping/intersecting closed meshes can be treated as a single SSS volume? That can be a very handy feature in some cases.

Thanks.

Hello, welcome Adrian!

It currently doesn’t, but it would be fairly easy to implement.

This is an interesting idea so I created a ticket to keep track of it: https://github.com/appleseedhq/appleseed/issues/1229

You actually don’t need Max or Maya to play with appleseed. If you want to get a feeling for how it works, you can just use the bunded appleseed.studio application. You can also try playing with Gaffer which has a full-featured appleseed integration: http://www.gafferhq.org/

Wow, thanks for the strong response. Much appreciated!

FYI, SSS sets have been implemented and will be available in the next release.

Thanks, that’s good news.

There is also an add-on for Blender called Blenderseed

Cool, I had almost forgotten about this. I’m a Blender user, so I will definitely give this a try!
